Net-Energy Billing

For those of you who have installed a solar electric system, check your bill to ensure you have been switched over to a ‘net-energy’ billing system with your utility company.

Though you may not see an excess of credits until the high production summer months, you should see the net energy between what your system has distributed though the meter and what your household/business has consumed.

Please review the ‘net-energy’ example bills for Xcel and Bayfield Electric Cooperative below to verify that your billing is similar. If you think your billing is incorrect, please contact your utility. When you speak to someone, let them know you have a solar electric system and you are questioning if you have been switched to ‘net-energy’ billing.

METER READING INFORMATION - Explanation
Ensure your bill's Meter Reading Information section looks like the example to the left containing 4 sections:
  • Total Delivered by Xcel = Net consumption, or kWh's used at your location
  • Total Delivered by Customer = Net amount of solar electricity you produced (excess solar generation measured through your bi-directional meter). Note: your actual production as read through your inverter will be higher because some kWh's will be used before going through your meter.
  • Net Delivered by Xcel = If your electric usage was more than you produced, this will display the amount of electricity you required from Xcel (either from a prior credit or charged on this bill)
  • Net Generated by Customer = If your solar production was more than you consumed, this will reflect the difference that will be credited on your account for future consumption

READINGS THIS PERIOD - Explanation of Codes
  • NCONS or SGKWH  =  Net Consumption, or kWh's used at your location
  • GENNT  =  Generation Net (excess solar generation measured through your bi-directional meter).  Note: your actual total generation as read on your inverter or the inverter's app is higher because you likely used some kWh's in your buildings before the excess went through the meter.
  • SGGEN  =  Solar Garden Generation (if you bought shares).  The number of shares you bought will be listed in the Multiplier column.
  • RSNTN   =  Residential Net, billed amount [NCONS minus (GENNT + SGGEN + banked)].  This is what you will be billed for in your ELECTRIC SERVICE charge field.
  • RESNT  =  Residential Net, billed amount from a meter that is not tied into solar generation.
  • HSNT  =  Heat Storage meter
  • DSNS = Dual Service, No Sales tax.  This member has two meters, but not a Dual Fuel (DF) or Heat Storage (HS) meter
