The Chequamegon Humane Association's new 15kW solar array is another shining example of community supported renewable energy. The project began with grant funding from RENEW Wisconsin's Solar for Good which donated 50% of the solar panels. Additional funding will be secured through the new Elective Pay, also known as Direct Pay, offered to nonprofits and municipalities through the Inflation Reduction Act. Lastly, the community chipped in over $17,000 to cover the remaining costs.
The installation contractor, Jolma Electric of Ashland, WI, won a competitive bid and offered a great installation price as well as a professional installation. The project also showcases new bifacial solar panels which can collect solar energy from both top and bottom surfaces, increasing efficiency by capturing reflected light. This technology is especially effective in northern climates where the high reflective value of snow assists in winter generation.
