Sun Day Solar Presentation and Tour
Sunday, September 21, 2025, 1:00-3:00pm
Bayfield County Courthouse Annex
Bayfield County and Cheq Bay Renewables are co-hosting an in-person tour of Bayfield County’s Courthouse/Jail microgrid. This event is part of a national effort lead by Action Network and Third Act Wisconsin to highlight the benefits of renewable energy. Bayfield County is a state leader in demonstrating renewable energy solutions.
The event will showcase an advanced microgrid that integrates two large commercial buildings with solar photovoltaics, battery backup, diesel generation, and sophisticated controls. The microgrid has the capability to operate with or without the electric grid. It is controlled by an ELM microgrid controller and muGrid Analytics’ propriety Redcloud software as a supervisory layer that operates in real time. Redcloud has machine learning and predictive capabilities. The system also integrates with Xcel Energy’s VIPER recloser which allows the microgrid to seamlessly isolate or integrate with the electric grid. The microgrid is Xcel’s first application of their experimental Resiliency Service Pilot tariff (RS-1).
The event will take place on Sunday, September 21, from 1-3pm and will start in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) room of the Courthouse Annex at 117 E 6th St., Washburn, WI, 54891. Introductions and presentation will start at 1:15pm. It will consist of a PowerPoint presentation highlighting Bayfield County energy projects over the last decade, with a focus on the Courthouse/Jail microgrid’s current system capabilities and performance, as well as plans for future expansion. The presentation will be followed by a walk-around tour of the facilities. Light refreshments will be provided. You can register for this event here, so we have enough treats to pass around.
